Cannabis Edibles—What Should I Know

Education Series by Randy Hebert, MD, Medical Director

Cannabis is another name for marijuana. Many people have started to use cannabis edibles (e.g. capsules, gummies, baked goods, etc.) in the last several years for reasons as diverse as pain, nausea and insomnia.

While thought to be generally safe, edibles do have side effects, particularly in older people. Specifically, they may interact with prescription medications and may lead to increased confusions, falls, and in some cases, emergency department visits.

Although available over the counter, please talk to your doctor before using cannabis edibles. Also, be sure to understand that states have different laws governing cannabis use.
